The Model Jesus Gave Us

Allow 70 minutes for this session

Each of our Explore sessions start with LOOKING BACK.  This is your opportunity to celebrate what God has done.  Our job is to take action relying on the power of the Holy Spirit.  The results are up to God.

  • Some of the particpants may have seen great success from their efforts.  Celebrate with them.
  • Some participants may not have seen any results from their efforts. Encourage them.
  • Some participants may not have even attempted the steps of faith.  Ask them if they are still committed to doing these things.  Offer suggestions of how they can be successful and pray for them.

When the group comes back together:

Ask a few people to share.

Then say, "I would like to help you get to 100 prayer partners over the next few months.  Later on you will want more and I will show you how to multiply that to 1,000 -- the number it seems to take to get to movement."

LOOKING UP

Introducing the  Five Phases of Jesus Ministry (20 minutes)

Jesus gave us model of how to build multiplying faith communities and churches.  During the coming months I encourage you to read the Gospels in chronological order. As you do this, you will see the logical progression of Jesus' ministry and gain insights into what He did and what He valued during each phase.

The Five Phases of Jesus' Ministry
Stage of Ministry

Phase 1 - Preparation

Phase 2 - Ministry Foundations

Phase 3 - Ministry Training

Phase 4 - Expanded Outreach

Phase 5 - Leadership Multiplication

(for further details see the series Being Like Jesus )

Phase 1: Preparation (20 minutes)

This period lasts from Jesus’ birth around 4 BC to about 30 years of age. This period is characterized by the following:

  • Becoming the person He sought to multiply in others
  • Preparing for a godly life and a movement of multiplication
  • Over the first 30 years of His life, Jesus “grew and became” (Luke 2:40 Luke 2:51-52 the Person He was going to multiply in others. All of this took place before His public ministry started. It was evident, from the beginning of His ministry, that Jesus had been praying, planning and clarifying what His ministry would be and how He would do it.

The passion of His heart was pure.

His purpose was clear.

The ministry process He decided on was simple:

  • He would connect with the lost,
  • win them to Himself,
  • build them in what it means to be a follower,
  • train them in fishing for others and
  • send them to multiply the same process with others.

Jesus determined that He would seek out and work through the people His Father had prepared.

Goals of Phase 1

Five things were in place at the end of Jesus preparation years:

  • Purpose: What is our mission?
  • Passion: What is our motive?
  • Product: What does our Heavenly Father want to produce through us?
  • Process: What are the steps in becoming a maturing disciplemaker?
  • People: Who has the Father sent to prepare the way?

For Jesus

  • Purpose: Launch a Disciple Making Movement for the redemption of the world.
  • Passion: Loving God and Loving People
  • Product: Disciples... who can make disciples... who can make disciples
  • Process: We will discover this as we look at His life chronologically
  • People: Primarily the lost sheep of Israel, but he did significant cross-cultural ministry starting with the people that God had already prepared (People of Peace).
How does this relate to you and me?

Notice first that Jesus grew in "wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man".  As leaders our task of growing never stops.  As God entrusts us with greater impact in the lives of others He expects growth in our character.  In fact, God cares more about our character growth than the growth of our church or faith community.

We want to help with your character growth. Take a look at the outline for Develop. The first section each time we meet is the Heart of a Leader: Evaluating our Walk with God

LOOKING FORWARD

Let's focus for a few minutes now on the people God wants you to connect with.

(In Generations we want to focus on both the social circles a person is in AND the new social circles they may wish to enter)

People: Social Circles (15 minutes)

Map out your social connections using a daisy illustration.

  • Write your name in the middle.
  • Label each petal with a social group or community that you’re a part of or would like to be part of. (eg. Immediate family, extended family, footy team, work, neighbours, gym etc).
  • List people/groups in these petals who need Jesus.

It’s called a “Daisy Chain” because every person in your daisy will have their own relationship network (daisy).

Many Christians need to expand their social circle so that they are meeting regularly (at least every two weeks)  with the same non-Christians. What are some possible groups you can join?

  • sports team
  • hobby group
  • gaming community
  • school P&C
  • meetup group

Before our next sesssion
  1. Review your Daisy Chain regularly, praying for the people on it and asking God if there is a specific message they need to hear.
  2. Show two people how to make their own Daisy.  You might find the video below helpful.
  3. Write down the Product you want to produce. What should be true about the people who are regularly involved in your spiritual community (church)? Post you answer on our social media channel.
